Ross Watson Exhibition

EXHIBITION OPENS JUNE 18 - 29, 2014
Artist's Reception Thursday June 19, 6 - 8pm

Ross Watson's eye-catching and distinctive artworks have earned him a passionate global following. Elton John has collected his art for 25 years, and wrote "I never tire of his paintings - he's a leader in contemporary realism."

This exceptional solo exhibition is the first in Canada for the celebrated Australian artist, who loves and knows Toronto well, and whose art has been included in the Toronto International Art Fair. "I'm excited to see friends and collectors of my art again in Toronto, which has many great things in common with Melbourne - art, cuisine and multi-culturalism."

Following sell-out exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney, this much anticipated exhibition features some of the artist's most iconic paintings and editions. The National Gallery of Australia and National Portrait Gallery collect his art, famed for fusing classical European art references and contemporary imagery. Watson explores themes relevant to us today; the change and impact of social media, sexuality and religion.
Sir Ian McKellen opened Watson's third London exhibition, and exclaimed 'He's a magician!' as he studied the artist's perfected painting technique during the launch, which raised $14,000 for a British HIV/AIDS charity.

Included in the exhibition are the striking 010:COAST artworks featuring seriously sexy surf twins and life guards, of which the Melbourne based artist wrote - "depicting dreamscapes: Ideals of beauty. 'Visions to stop us in our tracks, to catch our collective breath and admire with intrigue'."

English actor TV presenter Stephen Fry, Olympic Gold medalist Matthew Mitcham, Jake Shears, Francois Sagat and Marco Da Silva have modelled for Watson, the results of which feature in this must-see exhibition; all examples of the artist's celebration of gay icons throughout his thirty year international career.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation is the beneficiary of all sales of a superb new Limited Edition Print exhibited for the very first time during WorldPride Toronto.
